Minangkabau International Airport

Minangkabau International Airport stands as a prominent international gateway in the province of West Sumatra, facilitating air travel for the region. Situated approximately 23 km from the heart of Padang City, which serves as the capital of West Sumatra Province, Minangkabau International Airport plays a pivotal role in connecting the province to the rest of the world. Nestled within the Ketaping area, in the Batang Anai sub-district of Padang Pariaman Regency, this airport serves as a vital transportation hub in the region.

The airport’s history dates to its inception in 2002, when construction began. It was officially inaugurated and began full-scale operations on July 22, 2005, effectively replacing the older Tabing Airport. What sets Minangkabau International Airport apart is its unique nomenclature – it’s the only airport globally to be named after an ethnic group. This distinct nomenclature reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Minangkabau people, who have a long-standing history in the region.

In recognition of its strategic importance, the Ministry of Religious Affairs designated Minangkabau International Airport as an embarkation and debarkation point for Hajj pilgrims from West Sumatra, Bengkulu, and parts of Jambi in 2006. This recognition not only showcases the airport's significance in regional and international travel but also underscores its cultural and religious importance to the people it serves.

The airport’s infrastructure includes four runways (with plans to expand to seven as part of the new terminal construction phase), serving as vital links between the terminal buildings and aircraft. These runways are essential to the smooth flow of air traffic, facilitating efficient arrivals and departures while
catering to the growing number of passengers.

Minangkabau International Airport stands as a symbol of progress, connectivity, and cultural significance in West Sumatra. With its modern facilities, strategic location, and distinct nomenclature, the airport not only enhances regional and international travel but also reflects the proud heritage of the Minangkabau people. As it continues to grow and develop, it will undoubtedly play an increasingly important role in connecting West Sumatra with the rest of the world.

Since January 1, 2012, PT Angkasa Pura II has extended the operational hours of Minangkabau International Airport until 00:00 WIB, compared to the previous closing time of 21:00. This extension, aimed at accommodating diverse traveler schedules, reflects the airport’s commitment to convenience and adaptability. The move acknowledges the evolving nature of air travel and positions the airport as a key regional hub for seamless connections.
